Antibiotics Can Cause Adverse Reactions

Antibiotics Can Cause Adverse Reactions

Before using antibiotics, weigh the risks and benefits carefully.

Every year, 70,000 kids go to the ER over adverse reactions to antibiotics. The biggest culprits are amoxicillin (up to age 9) and smx/tmp (10-19yo). These are the antibiotics used for ear infections, skin infections, and upper respiratory infections.

Adverse reactions commonly include allergic reactions. These result in symptoms such as a rash, itching or severe swelling beneath the skin. The reactions are more common in younger and more severe as well, especially in those less than 2 year old.

Have a conversation with your doctor before any antibiotic use.
